When a music
buff listens to Jaayen To Jaayen Kahaan,
the gem from Taxi Driver (1954),
he/she invariably fails to figure out whether the lyricist (the redoubtable
Sahir Ludhianvi) wanted to convey the cabbie’s dilemma or that of Talat.
Although the
song’s (Mah)mood was melancholic, it went to become more popular than its
female version, which was sung by Lata Mangeshkar.
Kaali-peeli drivers in Mumbai now have to contend
with app-based cab aggregators like Ola and Uber, but one thing is for sure – no
global positioning system can render this S D Burman composition
irrelevant.
