Kishore was truly a (Peh)livewire

Today is the first of August, and there could be no better way to pay homage to the multi-faceted Kishore Kumar than with a mention of Pehli Tarikh, the 1954 film whose title track was sung by him.

Penned by Qamar Jalalabadi, it went, “Din hai suhaana aaj pehli tareekh hai, khush hai zamaana aaj pehli tareekh hai” (It’s a beautiful day, it’s the first of the month. Everyone’s happy, it’s the first of the month).

It was de rigueur for Radio Ceylon to play the Sudhir Phadke composition on the first of every month.
