By the time Ketaki Gulab Juhi, from Basant Bahar, was penned by Shailendra
and composed by Shankar Jaikishan, their careers were in full bloom.
Incidentally, Basant
and Bahar were also the names of the ragas
on which this track was based.
It wasn’t just a
duet, but was also one of the most famous vocal duels in the history of Hindi
film music.
One of the
singers Dey picked was Manna. That was a no-brainer, given his expertise in
rendering classical songs that have gone on to become classics.
The other was
Pandit Bhimsen Joshi.
