The Filmfare Best
Playback Singer award was instituted in 1959. But if it were instituted seven
years earlier, Mukesh would certainly have been nominated for Awaara Hoon, Awaara’s (1951) title track.
But the song,
penned by Shankardas Kesarilal (whose nom de plume was Shailendra) and composed
by Shankar Singh Raghuvanshi and Jaikishan Dayabhai Panchal (simply known as Shankar
Jaikishan), was destined for greater glory.
People from as
far afield as China, the erstwhile Soviet Union and the Middle East appreciated
it. And that was definitely a bigger accolade than any Awa(a)r(a)d for the
aforementioned quartet.
